Bacon Galbi & Much Soju with Tiger

Posted by Picasa

I have been neglecting this blog for a while. But this picture might explain one of the reasons. I've been hanging out with a rock band called Tiger. Three very talented musician, crazy puppies! Just what the doctor ordered....

The pictures are taken in Woodstock Bar where Tiger currently do nightly gigs, and at a Pork Galbi joint in Itaewon (the seedy part of Seoul). Around 4am one day in February. It's all a blur now so I can't really tell you more about it. But here is a bit of insight into Seoul's sub- culture for you:

A traditional night of debauchery in Seoul goes something like this:
Tank the belly up on some beer than find the nearest bacon frying place. It will probably be a traditional joint with heated floor called Ondol on which you will sit cross legged till get completely legless on Soju. This would be the Vodka or 'Palinka' (snaps) of Korea. Lethal clear liquid that may also be used as nail-warnish remover...:o)
The bacon come is thick greasy slabs, which gets placed on some kind of metal dome shaped cooker with a gas ring fire burner below. the bacon gets sizzling and then the closest person cuts it up with a big pair of scissors. The table is covered with Kimchi (Sour Cabbage with garlic and chili) and many small, cold vegetable dishes and a plate of salad leaf. They way to eat the stuff is to lay a piece of leaf on your palm, use the chopsticks to pick and stuff a piece of fried bacon and some Kimchi into the leaf then fold into a little package. Now it has a name; Galbi. Stuff it into your face and chew. Naturally every bite must be washed down with Soju. After an hour of this if you don't feel like a giant legless toad, you're probably doing something wrong.
